What is it?
Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy or KAP is a therapeutic approach that integrates the administration of ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic, with psychotherapeutic support to address various mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, and PTSD. In this modality, ketamine is administered in controlled, subanesthetic doses to facilitate altered states of consciousness, enabling individuals to explore and navigate through difficult emotions, thoughts, and memories under the guidance of a trained psychotherapist. This synergistic process aims to help individuals reframe and integrate their experiences, fostering enduring mental health improvements and enhanced self-awareness. It is particularly valuable for those with treatment-resistant conditions, offering rapid and lasting relief by unlocking new therapeutic pathways and enhancing the effectiveness of concurrent psychotherapeutic interventions.
Why do KAP?
KAP + Therapy is more successful than therapy or Ketamine alone.
A study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry in 2020 examined the efficacy of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) compared to ketamine administration alone in patients with treatment-resistant depression. The study involved 41 participants who received either ketamine alone or ketamine combined with psychotherapy. The results showed that the group receiving ketamine-assisted psychotherapy had significantly greater reductions in depressive symptoms compared to the group receiving ketamine alone. Moreover, the benefits were sustained over a longer period.
Another study, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders in 2021, investigated the effectiveness of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy in patients with PTSD. The findings suggested that combining ketamine administration with psychotherapy resulted in greater improvements in PTSD symptoms compared to ketamine administration alone.
These studies highlight the potential synergistic effects of combining ketamine with therapy, indicating that the therapeutic benefits of ketamine may be enhanced when paired with psychotherapeutic support.
